Privacy

Espresso reads your disks so it can search them, and that’s all it does with them. No analytics, no telemetry, nothing about your files ever leaves your Mac.

What Espresso reads

  • File names, sizes, dates and Finder tags, to build the index.
  • Extended details such as image dimensions, durations and page counts, from Spotlight or from the files’ own headers. You choose which in Settings › Metadata.
  • What’s inside files only if you turn on Inside files (Espresso Pro), and then only on your Mac.

Where it’s kept

The index lives on your Mac, in ~/Library/Application Support/Espresso. What Ask the Barista learns about your files is stored next to it. Neither is ever uploaded.

When Espresso goes online

Espresso has no analytics and no telemetry. It connects to the internet only to:

  • check for updates, once a day (you can turn it off in Settings › General);
  • start a Pro trial (with your email) or activate a license, when you ask;
  • check the license about once a month while Pro is active;
  • download Ask the Barista’s model from Hugging Face, once, if you ask for it.

None of these requests contains file names or anything from your index.

Ask the Barista

The model runs on your Mac’s Neural Engine. Your questions, and what it learns about your files, never leave the Mac.

AI assistants

If you connect an AI assistant such as Claude, the names and paths it finds are sent to that assistant’s provider, like anything else you share in a chat. Assistants can’t open, move or delete files.
